The Prince of Poker, Scotty Nguyen, is known for his World Series of Poker wins, but yet he is also known for so much more. He has won several bracelets and is one of the top moneymakers. He has an eventful, and yet a well-known career in the spotlight.

Thuan “Scotty” Nguyen was born on October 28, 1962, in Vietnam. He came with his family to the United States of America when he was only fourteen years old. There he began to divulge himself into our culture, and into our games. He was ultimately suspended from school when he was spending more time with underground poker games than he was spending on school. At the age of twenty-one, Scotty Nguyen went to a dealer school and was soon employed by Harrahs Poker room. This was when his peak for poker really took place. He made around one hundred and fifty dollars a night in tips and wages and lost most of it playing three or four dollar stud games. He himself knew he wasn’t very good yet, but he couldn’t stop. In the future, he realized that not quitting poker was a good thing.

His luck in poker changed in 1985. He was invited to a No-Limit Texas Hold’Em Tournament up in Lake Tahoe. He spent all night playing with his bankroll, which wasn’t very big and ended up making 7,000 dollars that night alone. He felt invincible and went to Las Vegas where he continued to gamble, and eventually brought his seven thousand dollars up to one million dollars. He continued to win big as he got himself into bigger and bigger tournaments until he got into games with poker professionals including Johnny Chan, David Grey, and Puggy Pearson. Unfortunately, he gave into bad habits and ended up losing every dime he had and was spared 5,000 dollars and a room.

Although he didn’t always stay down he ended up winning the 1997 World Series of Poker $2,000 Omaha 8 tournament which ended up in him winning over $150,000. He had his bankroll, but not for long. He ended up losing it again only to find himself in the 1998 World Series of Poker event. With the help of a friend who saw potential in him, Mike Matusow, he was able to join that even in which he won. He ended up winning his share, which was over $330,000.

Scotty Nguyen won his first World Poker Tour in January 2006 by beating his opponent Micheal Mizrachi in a heads up hand. He was one of the first people, five, in fact, to have both won a World Series of Poker and a World Poker Tour title. Although Scotty’s journey to winning both the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker was filled with both loss and gain it ended up with him winning in the end. Very much like a hand of poker. You have to bet and go all in to have the chance of winning in the end. That is exactly what Thuan “Scotty” Nguyen did. He risked it all and won big.
